Institutional Development Manager

For more than 30 years, Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) has used science and medicine to document and call attention to mass atrocities and severe human rights violations. PHR, which shared in the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize for its work to end the scourge of landmines, is poised for even greater growth and impact. As part of that strategy, we are very excited to be recruiting committed activists with a passion for human rights.

One such role is that of institutional development manager. This position will be responsible for identifying new prospective donors and creating and implementing strategies for PHR’s institutional giving program, comprised of foundations, governments, and corporate funders. The institutional development manager will supervise a staff of three (two grant writers and an institutional development coordinator). S/he will help to establish and maintain relationships with PHR’s institutional funders and work closely with program and other staff to write grant proposals and reports and help ensure compliance with all awarded grants and their requirements.

Location: New York, NY

Responsibilities

  • Work with the CDO, the executive director, senior staff, and program staff to implement short- and long-term strategies to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward foundations and government grant-making organizations for general and restricted support.
  • Determine fundraising goals to meet programmatic needs and assume responsibility for ensuring these goals are met.
  • Identify and steward new institutional funding prospects as well as steward current donor relationships; help develop and implement solicitation and cultivation strategies.
  • In tandem with the CDO, present new funding opportunities to the executive team.
  • Oversee and prepare written communications as well as delegate writing projects for the development department, including letters of inquiry, proposals, reports, budgets, pitch letters, grant applications, and periodic updates on activities to secure new funding and renewals, and to comply with grant reporting requirements.
  • Coordinate with senior and program staff on grant fundraising efforts and oversee submission of proposals and reports.
  • Partner with controller and CDO to prepare grant budget proposals, financial reports, and other information for tracking, analysis, budgeting, and internal/external reporting.
  • Implement best practices for grant applications and ensure the appropriate approval and review process is followed; develop and oversee adherence to calendar for proposal and reporting deadlines; ensure they are communicated to relevant parties in a timely manner.
  • Recruit, hire, and inspire a top-notch professional staff that also includes rotating interns. 
  • Assist the CDO with other functions as needed. 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum five to seven years demonstrated successful management of a complex fundraising program, including foundation relations and grant writing experience or equivalent experience.  Knowledge of Moves Management is a plus.
  • Experience working with government funders and grants.
  • Proven understanding of and ability to work with and prepare budgets.
  • Demonstrated experience inspiring and leading a dynamic team, supporting professional development, effectively delegating, and project managing multiple simultaneous work streams.
  • Proven track record of fundraising success.
  • Demonstrated experience in content development and persuasive writing.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, especially MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook.
  • Working knowledge of Salesforce is a plus.

  • Outstanding communications skills, both verbal and written, including the ability to write and edit persuasively on a wide range of human rights issues, and the ability to grasp and communicate substantive PHR policies and programs.

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and leadership in a collaborative, professional, and ethical manner.

Salary and Benefits

This is a full-time position located in New York City and is an in-office-based role (not remote.) Salary is commensurate with experience. PHR offers comprehensive employer-paid benefits, including medical, dental, disability, and life insurance, a retirement savings plan, and generous vacation.
