Following the Sierra Leone Civil War, PHR conducted an investigation into the prevalence and impact of human rights abuses among people internally displaced by the conflict. We found evidence of sexual violence, beatings, rape, killings, torture, and amputations committed by combatants. These findings were presented to the Special Court for Sierra Leone, which in 2012 found former warlord and Liberian President Charles Taylor guilty of 11 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Detailed findings from the study, conducted in collaboration with the United Nations Assistance Mission in Sierra Leone, were published in the report “War-Related Sexual Violence in Sierra Leone.”
