For Immediate Release
Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) today called for an immediate, impartial investigation into the murder of a Congolese doctor slain at his home on the night of April 13. Dr. Gildo Magadju Byamungu was the medical director of the general hospital in Uvira, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). An obstetrician/gynecologist, Dr. Byamungu was a protégé of Dr. Denis Mukwege, a longtime partner of PHR who has led efforts to treat survivors of sexual violence in eastern DRC and bring perpetrators to justice.
The following statement is attributable to Susannah Sirkin, PHR’s director of international policy and partnerships:
“Dr. Byamungu’s death is a tragic marker for all those who care for survivors of sexual violence. Congolese authorities must take every possible step to fully and impartially investigate his killing and hold the perpetrators accountable. For far too long, health professionals like Dr. Byamungu have been under threat, not just for treating their patients, but for speaking out on behalf of survivors of sexual violence and working for a Congo that will one day be free of unchecked violence. Dr. Byamungu will be remembered for his courage and his commitment to his patients. Our hearts are with his family, friends, and colleagues at this difficult time.”
