Adam Richards, MD, PhD, MPH is an internist and health services researcher based in Los Angeles. He currently serves as senior technical advisor to Community Partners International (CPI), a non-profit organization that empowers communities affected by conflict, violence, and displacement in remote and hard-to-reach contexts to meet their essential health, humanitarian, and development needs. Dr. Richards partners with community organizations in Myanmar to develop measurement tools and evidence-based interventions to address the double burden of infectious and chronic diseases. His areas of expertise include methods to quantify the health impacts of human rights violations.
Dr. Richards has been an active member of PHR’s Asylum Network since 2005, and he has mentored dozens of students, residents, and licensed clinicians throughout southern California to conduct forensic evaluations of asylum seekers. Prior to his current position, he served as assistant professor in the division of general internal medicine and health services research at the University of California Los Angeles, where he served as faculty co-founder of the LA Human Rights Initiative, a student group affiliated with PHR whose mission is to conduct asylum evaluations and promote immigrant rights through teaching, research, and advocacy.
Dr. Richards is board certified in internal medicine and provides clinical care as a hospitalist, primary care physician, and a member of street outreach teams that serve LA’s homeless population.
He holds an MD and MPH from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the Bloomberg School of Public Health. He completed his residency at the Social Internal Medicine Program at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein School of Medicine. He holds a PhD from the UCLA School of Public Health and an AB in history and literature from Harvard College.
