Naitore Nyamu-Mathenge, LLM, MA

As the head of PHR’s Kenya office, Naitore Nyamu-Mathenge is responsible for the advancement of the Program on Sexual Violence in Conflict Zones in Kenya. She represents PHR to government, local, and international partners and leads strategic advocacy, research, litigation, and capacity development programs to strengthen collection of forensic evidence and influence collaboration among health, law enforcement, legal, and judicial actors with the goal of enhancing accountability for sexual violence in Kenya.

With more than 10 years’ experience working with various national and international NGOs, Nyamu-Mathenge joins PHR from Equality Now, where she managed multi-country campaigns aimed at addressing sexual and gender-based violence in Kenya, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, and Zambia. Her expertise on state accountability in legal cases has allowed her to focus on advocacy and training on the African Human Rights Systems and the workings of the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, and the African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights.

Nyamu-Mathenge is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya and she holds a master’s degree in international relations and diplomacy from USIU, a bachelor of law degree from the University of South Africa and a bachelor of arts degree in political science from the University of Nairobi. She holds an LLM from University of Pretoria.
