Every year, more than 100,000 people flee torture and unbearable persecution in their home country and seek safety in the United States. PHR-trained health professionals in our 1,200-strong Asylum Network support asylum seekers’ applications by providing medical and psychological evaluations that reveal the scars left by torture, beatings, sexual violence, slavery, and other abuses.
As the U.S. administration steps up its assault on immigrants and asylum seekers, PHR medical experts are also using their skills to highlight the profound and lasting harm caused by family separation and detention. According to a recent study of refugees, family separation has a health impact similar to being beaten or tortured.
