Over 250,000 confirmed deaths from COVID-19 in the United States and the number continues to rise every day. Medical professionals and public health experts have called many of these deaths preventable. We can’t sit by while tens of thousands more – including the doctors, nurses, and first responders working to keep our communities safe – become infected and die due to a complete lack of local, state, and federal leadership. 

That is why we’re calling on the public to join Physicians for Human Rights and our community of over 130,000 medical professionals and human right advocates in supporting a national mask mandate in the United States. Join us by adding your name now.

There is consensus among leading scientists and public health officials that universal masking is proven to be effective at curbing the spread of COVID-19. PHR respects and upholds individual rights, yet we also recognize that when it comes to public health amid a pandemic, those rights come with responsibilities. That is why we are advocating for a national mandate that requires masks to be worn when indoors and outside when unable to socially distance (with reasonable exceptions for eating or drinking, sensory processing disorders, or severe breathing problems that make masking challenging).

Without a coordinated science-based public health response to the pandemic, we will see more and more preventable deaths. It’s past time for U.S. politicians and leaders to take definitive action. And now we must demand that action.
