Prior to joining Cornell, Dr. Shin completed his medical education and residency at NYU School of Medicine, where he worked with Dr. Allen Keller and the NYU/Bellevue Program for Survivors of Torture for more than 10 years.
Joseph Shin
Joseph Shin is an assistant professor of medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine and attending physician at New York Presbyterian Hospital with a passion for advancing human rights through education, advocacy, and research. He serves as co-medical director for PHR’s oldest medical school asylum clinic, the Weill Cornell Center for Human Rights, overseeing clinical operations for medical forensic evaluations for asylees and survivors of torture. He also conducts medical-legal advocacy in partnership with New York Lawyers for the Public Interest and The Legal Aid Society in correctional and immigration detention settings, highlighting abuses and disparities in health care. With support from the Cornell Institute for Primary Care Innovations, Dr. Shin also conducts research studying barriers to identification and effective linkage to services for trafficking victims.
