Justin Nyatete Nyakundi is a senior investigations officer working with Kenya’s Independent Policing Oversight Authority based at the Nakuru Regional Office, where he conducts investigations into crimes committed by members of the National Police Service. He is retired from Kenya’s National Police Service, where he served for 14 years as a police officer and worked in the Children Protection and Gender Unit investigating sexual offences cases.
Nyatete has more than a decade of experience in forensic investigations of sexual offences and trains other police officers in investigating sexual assault cases. He has worked closely with PHR in capacity-building, joint trainings of medical personnel and police officers in such areas as forensic evidence collection and documentation, and training of trainers. He has also been involved in preparing proposals for amendments of the Sexual Offences Act and spearheaded a task force on the Implementation of the Sexual Offences Act in Kenya. Nyatete is also an accredited certified professional mediator trained by the Mediation Training Institute, where he mediates cases assigned by the High Court.
Nyatete holds a BA in criminology and security studies (forensic and criminal investigation) from Egerton University and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in gender, women, and development studies at Egerton.
