For Immediate Release
Cambridge, Mass. — April 9, 2011 — Nearly three years after he was imprisoned, Dr. Binayak Sen has been released on bail. Dr. Sen, a physician and human rights activist detained by Indian authorities for his alleged involvement with prisoners who are a part of the banned Communist Party, was sentenced to life in prison by the Chattisgarh Court in India in December.
Prior to his imprisonment, the celebrated pediatrician had dedicated his life to the service of the poor and underprivileged in India. Dr. Sen will have to appeal his case in the lower courts and PHR calls once again for a prompt overturning of the sentence against Dr. Sen.
“PHR has been calling for the release of Dr. Sen since his initial imprisonment,” said Susannah Sirkin, Deputy Director of Physicians for Human Rights. “We are delighted that he has been released to rejoin his family, and we call for continued justice with the overturning of his sentence in the lower courts.”
